Since 1982, the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force, based in Geilenkirchen, has been providing aerial surveillance for NATO Allies, ensuring the integrity and security of NATO airspace. Over the past four decades, NATO E-3A AWACS have been deployed on a variety of missions in support of counter-terrorism, evacuations or humanitarian aid. The E-3A component occupies a unique place in NATO history as it is the first multinational flying unit established by the Alliance, with 20 NATO member states participating. Silhouettes of aircraft operated by NATO member states over the decades have been applied to the blue stripe that runs along both sides of the fuselage - from the Saab Draken, the massive C-5 Galaxy, to today's F-35 stealth fighter.
